I’m not exactly sure what it is about the horror movie sub-genre of zombies that lends itself so well to humor, but zombie flicks — even OG serious ones like the archetypal Night Of The Living Dead — have always cracked me up, and zombie horror / comedy / action hybrids like Shaun Of The Dead and Planet Terror work so well as equal parts action-packed gore-porn and gut-busting laugh-fests.
Perhaps it’s the notion that anything that’s risen from the dead yet still generally lacks superhuman speed, strength or fortitude, and the basic cognitive ability to carry out pointed acts of pure evil isn’t actually all that scary (except for that whole thing about eating brains and infecting the living with their undead status). And I know, these things vary depending on the zombie flick you’re watching, but generally speaking, zombies aren’t evil masterminds or satanic track stars, which relegates them all to easily to the laughing stock of monster movie monsters.
At any rate, I was fumbling around the internet recently and came across this trailer for the upcoming Zombie movie Zombieland. It looks brilliant — a nice mix of dark comedy, unabashed violence and bloody-as-hell gore. Perfect…
